What lawn tools could I rent or buy to help me improve our lawn?

Dilbert asked:

We have mostly weeds, and want to plant a lot of grass seeds, to try to crowd out the weeds. We probably need to dethatch, aerate, etc., then plant the seeds, then water frequently till the seeds sprout, and probably mow frequently to keep the weeds from growing back. We have a mower but nothing to dethatch or aerate or anything. We’ve heard of a power rake but don’t know where to rent one or how to use it. Or what other tools should we rent or buy, and where we should get them?

Will rusty tools used on my veggie garden give my customers tetanus?

I had a small veggie garden last year, so this wasn’t a problem as I used some small tools I purchased myself. This year, I plan to go pro, and came upon some old tools (spade, pitchfork, rake, etc) that were here from the previous owner of my house. Problem is, they’re rusty. Can I use them safely, or should I scrap them and buy all new stuff?
PS: I will be composting, too.

What are the essential tools for a beginning gardener?

I have a friend who is wanting to start gardening in her bare backyard. Her birthday is coming up and I want to put together a little package of essential gardening tools. I don’t know anything about gardening myself, so please help!
