How can i connect to the internet in a wireless network?

My brother has verizon fios internet in one room of the house while i only have a wireless adapter from netgear in mine. The adapter picks up signals from six wireless networks nearby but I don’t know the key to connect to either of the networks. I want internet on my computer but don’t know their network keys, what should i do?

There was a network connection between the two computers before the desktop crashed. They are both using Windows XP. After the desktop crashed, a new hard drive was installed. Help and/or detailed instructions with advice on how to network my desktop and laptop again would be greatly appreciated.
